Also any professional who plans to treat patients who are using alternative therapies on their own or in conjunction with a health care provider's recommendations. |

Activities
Required Activities
- Clinical Site Visits – Students will have an opportunity to work with alternative and Integrative Medicine practitioners in the greater Galveston and Houston area and travel will be required.
Spend at least 5 half-days per week with alternative practitioners observing their clinical practice and enter this educational encounter on the Site Visit Log Sheet. - CIM Elective - Site Visit Log Sheet

- Weekly scheduled seminars with designated course faculty
- Book Club - Student will read self-selected chapters from book and share them in weekly seminars.
- Complete 8 self-study online educational modules and print out the participation certificate once completed and turn them in with the other required materials.
- Complete the CIM Elective - Holistic Health Questionnaire
- Taking Charge of Your Health – My Health Planner http://www.thenewmedicine.org/health_planner
- Attend lectures and other activities on campus related to Alternative Medicine
- Attend Alternative and Integrative Therapies Journal Club (fourth Tuesday of month) see events on homepage of this site for next meeting
- Students will summarize and present articles to the journal club attendees.
- Prepare a four-page paper with at least 12 references on a CAM/Integrative Medicine topic of your choice. This should be evidence-based in a subject related to your future specialty.

- Faculty review of Site Visit Journals and student contibution to discussion
- Participation in seminar sessions
- Written assignments - student article, self-care plan, and online module evaluation
- Journal Club presentation and other written, reading, or research assignments as given by faculty.
Absence Policy
As per the SOM University policy, any absence from the elective must be approved by the administrative staff. You must notify the CAM practitioner or faculty with whom you are scheduled to work, and call the elective administrative staff at (409) 772-3126. Any unexcused absence may result in failure of the elective. Excused absences in excess of three days may also result in failure of the elective.
