Malott Chiropractic - Friday, April 25th at Noon

Have you ever wondered what a chiropractor does? Join us for lunch, as Dr. Mary E Malott-Brechtel, D.C. DACBN, who is both a doctor of chiropractic and a board certified clinical nutritionist, speaks with us about typical chiropractic and nutritional services. In the past, Dr. Malott has shared office space with family practice, internal medicine, and podiatrist specialists and thus has a unique integrative perspective to share. Mind-Body Medicine - Tuesday, February 12th at Noon

Come out Tuesday, February 12th to hear Thom Pfeil, M.D. speak about mind-body medicine. Dr. Pfeil is the medical director of Mind-Bodyworkers and is an outstanding resource in the field. Students for Integrative and Alternative Medicine (SIAM)


Please join us for our first meeting on Oct. 5, 2007 at Noon in the Senate Room, Jamail Student Center.

SIAM's mission is to create and maintain an interdisciplinary forum that will increase the opportunity for individuals to learn, experience and feel supported in the exploration of integrative medicine.

We encourage students, staff and faculty from all four schools to become involved. Our activities include ongoing UTMB CAM activities as well as some additional SIAM featured events.

If you'd like to join SIAM, or have questions, send an email to Becca Wood at rnwood@utmb.edu. Our faculty advisor is Dr. Victor Sierpina. The first 10 people wishing to join SIAM will have their dues paid courtesy of Dr. Sierpina and CAM.

UTMB Mind-Body Research Scholars Program

The round three deadline for the Mind-Body Research Scholars Program is April 3, 2006. Review of applications will be done between mid April and early May. Successful applicants will be announced and funds available by June 2006. The scholars program is intended to create an investigator development program for junior faculty to foster interdisciplinary mind-body research through mentoring, training in research tools, techniques and writing skills. The program will also support pilot projects with seed funding.

THE NEW MEDICINE - Journal Club - March 28, 2006

This planned Journal Club is going to be a bit different from previous meetings. It will discuss an upcoming Public Television program THE NEW MEDICINE premiers on March 29, 2006. This unique forum designed to discuss issues related to integrative medicine that this show will highlight with support of related articles. This forum, which will start in February and then run monthly April through September, will use clips and content from The New Medicine as triggers for discussion. Using an evidence-based approach, the screenings and related articles will be examined for issues of methodology, experimental design, statistical analysis and general clarity. Interdisciplinary Ethics Day

UTMB Mind-Body Research Scholars Program

Richard Brown, M.D. - Mind-Body Speaker
Richard Brown, M.D., Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York, NY will present a lecture entitled, Yoga Breathing: Neurophysiology and Clinical Benefits for Stress, Fatigue, Depression, and Trauma on Monday, July 11, from noon to 1 PM, in room 1.102, SAHS/SON building.

Internationally known biophysicist, Dr. Beverly Rubik, presents at UTMB
On Wednesday, June 29th, at 1 PM in the Primary Care Pavilion, Room 2.268, Dr. Bubik will present Family Medicine Grand Rounds on “Heart Rate Variability” and its relation to mind-body research and clinical implications regarding the autonomic system. This presentation is open to all faculty, house staff, and students. Interested public may also attend.
The same evening at 5:00 PM in Room 201 at UTMB’s Open Gates Conference Center, she will present “Biophysics and the Human Biofield: Experiments in QiGong, an Ancient Chinese Healing Method,” a topic that will be of interest to both the scientific community and the public.

 
Summer Institute on Sleeping, Eating, & Physical
Activity: A Focus on Health Behavior

The Pittsburgh Mind-Body Center is sponsoring a Summer Institute on Sleeping, Eating, & Physical Activity: A Focus on Health Behavior to be held June 8-11, 2005 in Pittsburgh, PA. The institute will be directed toward an audience of professionals who have a limited background in health psychology and behavioral medicine. Lectures and workshops will be geared toward individuals at the postdoctoral fellow, resident and/or junior faculty level. Team applications from 2-3 researchers at the same or nearby institutions will be given special consideration. Applications are due on April 25, 2005
